How to Soak Brass Knobs
Antique brass doorknobs are often found in historical houses. Brass doorknobs tarnish over time from exposure to the air and oils on people's hands. Many chemicals and products can clean brass knobs, but one of the easiest to use and most readily available is ammonia. You can soak your brass knobs in undiluted ammonia to clean off the tarnish and get them ready for polishing. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Phillips screwdriver
- Undiluted ammonia
- Rubber cleaning gloves
- Brass cleaner
- Soft cloth

Remove the doorknob by using a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold it to the door. Put the screws in a safe place. Slide the doorknob out of the door.

Open a bathroom window or turn on the bathroom fan. Plug the sink and gently place the brass doorknob into it. Carefully pour the undiluted ammonia into the sink until it completely covers or submerges the knob.

Soak the doorknob for one hour, remove it and rinse it off. Add water to the undiluted ammonia and then dispose of it.

Rub brass cleaner onto the doorknob with a soft cloth until it shines. Reinstall the brass knob.

Tips & Warnings
Cover the brass doorknob with a layer of lacquer to keep it from tarnishing quickly once you have cleaned it.
Ammonia can be dangerous if inhaled or ingested. Keep it away from young children and animals, and always use it with proper ventilation.
