There are many reasons that a person may be underweight, including health problems, poor nutrition or simply genetics. While some people prefer looking this way, there are many others who strive to raise their body weight to a more common level. This is possible, but it will take big changes to one's diet and fitness levels. With time, it is possible to put on healthy amounts of body fat and muscle mass.

Increase your calories steadily until you see your weight begin to increase. Start by increasing your daily calories by 250 and then add 250 a day until you have the results that you desire.

Eat as often as you are able to, including small snacks between meals.

Supplements your diet with liquid calories from sources such as whole fat milk and high calorie shakes.

Increase the amount of fats and whole grains that you consume. Add oils to your meals and drinks. For example, flax seed oil in a shake adds a nutty taste while increasing the amount of fat in the shake.

Take nutritional supplements to provide your body with extra sources of nutrition. Some helpful supplements include omega fatty acid supplements, fiber, vitamins and protein powder.

Use regular strength training to increase your muscle mass. Muscle is heavier than fat, so you will see your weight increase quicker if you do strength training exercises regularly.

Indulge in your favorite foods whenever you feel the desire to. If you are trying to gain weight, there is no reason to avoid the foods that you love.
