How to Transfer PDFs to an iPad

The iPad's operating system includes an application called iBooks that renders PDF documents, EPUB documents and electronic books bought through Apple's iTunes Store. Although the iBooks application is fully capable of displaying PDF documents, it does not render the "Virtual Page" display that is supported by EPUB and Apple e-book files. The process of transferring PDF documents to the iPad is similar to transferring music.

  • Launch "iTunes" on your computer.

  • Click "File" and select "Add to Library." Use the dialog window to find the PDF you want to transfer to your iPad. Highlight the file, and click "Choose" to add the PDF to your iTunes library.

  • Connect your iPad to your computer using the device's USB connector cable.

  • Click "Books" in the left sidebar. The main window pane displays your iTunes text library, including the PDF document you added.

  • Click the PDF document you want to transfer to your iPad. Drag the file's icon to your iPad icon shown in the left sidebar. Release the mouse button to drop the PDF document into your iPad when the iPad's icon turns blue. iTunes automatically syncs the device and transfers the PDF document to your iBook library.
