How to Twirl a Baton for Kids

Learn how to twirl a baton.

Baton twirling is a skill that is used in gymnastics, dance and marching band performances. Entertain your children by learning how to twirl a baton. Once you master the technique after a little bit of practice, you can even teach your children how to baton twirl. Begin with a basic baton twirling rhythm that will teach you how to spin the baton so that it is moving in a circle with a slight twist.

Instructions

1. Hold the baton vertically, in your dominant hand.

2. Hold the center of the baton with your index finger and thumb. You want the grip to be loose.

3. Turn your wrist so that the palm of your hand is facing the ground. This motion twirls the baton so that it is nearly horizontal.

4. Turn your wrist so that your palm faces upward. As you are turning your wrist, twist your hand so that your fingers point ahead of you. When you are finished with the motion, the baton will be pointing forward.

5. Move your forearm so that the inside of your wrist faces upward and the baton's tip that was pointing upward is now pointing downward and forward.

6. Move the baton, using your fingers, so that the tip once pointing forward is now pointing slightly toward you, almost vertical.

7. Repeat steps 1 through 6. Even if you have to start out slowly, concentrate on making the motions fluid. You can eventually build up speed once you understand the motions.
