How to Get Your Own Barcode

How to Get Your Own Barcode thumbnail
A barcode scanner is needed to upload the barcode data into a computer program.

Barcodes refer to printed black and white symbols that contain data which can be uploaded into a computer program using a barcode scanner. Barcodes come in various types and can be used in many applications, but all barcodes operate using the same basic technology. You can get your own barcode by creating the data you wish to encode, using a barcode-generating program to create the barcode image, and printing the barcode. Learning how to get your own barcodes can save you time and money.

Jot down the data that you wish to encode into a barcode. Open your Internet browser and visit sites that allow you to use a barcode-generating software program for free. View the program interface commonly placed on the website's home page. Look at the types of barcode and click on the type of barcode that you like to use. Code 128, Code 16K and Maxicode barcodes accepts all ASCII characters while EAN and UPC-A barcodes accepts numbers only. Look for the space where you can enter the data to be encoded into a barcode. Enter the data and click on "Generate Barcode" to turn the data into a barcode image.

View the barcode image presented by the program. Right click on the image to show a drop down menu. Click on "Save Image As" in the drop down menu to save the image in your computer. Open the saved image, and print the image using a regular printer, or a barcode printer.

Plug a barcode scanner to your computer, and scan the printed barcode to upload the data into the computer software program that you are using. View your computer and check the uploaded data for accuracy.
