How to Change a Schwinn Kick Stand

In 1895, Adolph Arnold and Ignaz Schwinn formed Arnold, Schwinn & Company. Since 1946, Schwinn bicycles have included built-in kickstands, mounted to the bottom of the frame. Kickstands provide an easy means to park or prop up a bicycle, without causing possible damage to the paint, handlebars or other exterior portions of the bicycle. Although Schwinn offers a specialty tool designed to remove built-in kickstands, a couple of commonly available tools will get the job done as well.

Things You'll Need

• Towel or rag
• Large pair of pliers
• Small pair of pliers
• Small nut

Instructions

1. Move the bicycle to a flat, solid surface, such as a concrete slab or asphalt driveway. Flip the bicycle upside down, so the seat and handlebars rest on the ground.

2. Place the kickstand in the normal retracted position. Hold a small nut against the exposed portion of the round bushing, where the angled portion of the kickstand fits into the tubular mount on the frame, using a pair of large pliers. Protect the opposing end of the tubular kickstand mount from scratches, using a small towel or rag.

3. Push the kickstand bushing further into the tubular mount, using the small nut and large pair of pliers. Continue holding the pressure against the bushing and remove the small pin near the kickstand rod with a small pair of pliers. Remove the large pair of pliers from the tubular mount.

4. Slide the kickstand rod from the tubular mount. Keep the small pin in a safe location for re-installation, if applicable.
