Writing Directions for the 3rd Grade
Follow the directions of the writing process to help you create your written assignments. The writing process will allow you to understand how to turn an idea into something you want to write about on paper. Your teacher may read from a book for ideas on what to write about. She also may give your class a writing prompt, which is an idea for something to write about. Using the directions on how to write a paper will help you to make your writing skills stronger.

Prewrite your work. Brainstorm your ideas with other students during the prewriting stage. The prewriting stage is where you talk about your ideas for what to write. You can work with other students or with the teacher to write down your thoughts. The prewriting stage helps you to explore what you will write about and gather the information you need for the writing.

Draft your work. Write a rough draft of your work during the draft stage. This stage of writing will allow you to put into words what you want to say. What you write will be a rough draft, and you can write anything you think of for your topic. You usually won't be using your spellers or other reference books to write your rough draft, but you can use your notes.

Revise your work. Get feedback on what you have written. To do this, hand in your paper or read it to the class. Listen to the feedback and decide what you want to use to revise your paper. During the revision stage, you fix up the paper to make it clearer or stronger. You may rewrite sentences or take out anything that you don't think is useful.

Edit your work. Review your paper for mistakes. This writing stage is called "editing," and it is where you go over your paper to catch any mistakes you have made. One thing to look for is mistakes in capitalization. Perhaps you forgot to capitalize the name of someone or you did not capitalize the title of a book. You can also watch for areas where you forgot to include a period or a comma. Look out for spelling mistakes, too.

Publish your work. Create a final draft of your paper. This is the final stage of the writing process, called "publishing." This is where you can take your revised and edited paper and create the final draft. Pay attention to the edits and the notes that are on your rough draft to make the changes in this new draft. Add any changes you have made to this draft, as well, such as new paragraphs or different names. You can type it up on the computer or write it out on a new piece of paper.
