Measuring with inches and centimeters can be a great way to measure smaller objects, or to get more detailed and accurate measurements on larger objects. All this requires is a tape measure and a knowledge of how many centimeters are equal to one inch. Any type of tape measure will work, from the flexible fabric-measuring kind to the hard plastic ones used in other situations.
Things You'll Need
- Tape measure
Stretch your tape measure from one end to the other across the object, surface or distance you are trying to measure.
Look at the "inch" measurements on the tape measure. Each inch measurement is accompanied by a number, which is the total number of inches across your distance. For example, one end of your tape measure is at the beginning of your object and is stretched across to the "18" inch measurement, that means your object is 18 inches in length.
Multiply the number of inches you got by 2.54. One inch is equal to 2.54 centimeters. The number you get is the total number of centimeters that your object measures. For example, 18 inches multiplied by 2.54 centimeters per inch equals 45.72 centimeters.
