How to Alter Colors in Photoshop

Creating a pink Eiffel Tower, a neon pink night sky or a bright blue cactus are real-life impossibilities, but that doesn't mean designers wishing to alter real-life colors are at a standstill. With an onscreen graphics palette such as the one provided in Adobe Photoshop, no color is locked down. You can alter colors using Photoshop to make a very slight change of hue or something not yet found in nature.

Instructions

    • 1

Open Photoshop. Click the "Image" menu at the top of the screen. Click "Adjustments." Click "Hue/Saturation" to open the small "Hue/Saturation" window.

    • 2

Slide the "Hue" bar to the left or right to alter colors within the entire image. Move the "Saturation" bar to the right to increase the brightness and vividness of the colors or to the left to slowly remove colors until the image is in grayscale. Click "OK" when you are satisfied.

    • 3

Click the "Lasso" tool on the "Tools" palette on the left-side of the workspace. Draw an outline around a section of the image to alter the colors.

    • 4

Repeat the "Hue/Saturation" process, but notice that only the highlighted section changes.

    • 5

Click the "Image" and "Adjustments" menu again. Click "Replace Color" to open the "Replace Color" window.

    • 6

Click the small eyedropper tool in the window. Click a color in the picture to alter. The eyedropper automatically selects all areas of the image with that color.

    • 7

Move the "Hue" and, if desired, "Saturation" sliders at the bottom of the window. Watch the main picture as all areas of the selected color are altered to the new color. Click "OK" when you are satisfied.

    • 8

Click the "Image" menu again. Select one of the "Auto Tone," "Auto Color" or "Auto Contrast" options. Watch how Photoshop automatically alters the colors. Click the "Edit" menu and select "Undo" to erase any unwanted color changes.

    • 9

Click the "File" menu. Click "Save As." Type a new name for the image to protect the unaltered color version and click "Save."
