How to Download Free Apps From the iTunes Store

iTunes apps are programs for mobile Apple devices. You can download apps directly on your device using the App Store app, or on your computer using iTunes. While some apps require a one-time fee for purchase, others are available at for free. Free apps are available for games, music, news and much more.

On iPad, iPhone or iPod touch

  • Tap the "App Store" icon on your device's home screen. The icon is blue and on the first page of your home screen by default.

  • Tap "Top 25" on the bottom of the screen and then select the "Top Free" tab from the top toolbar to see the most popular free applications. Scroll to the very bottom of the screen and tap "Show Top 50" to see 25 more of the most popular free apps.

  • Search for an app by name by tapping the "Search" icon at the bottom of the screen and entering its name in the Search field at the top of the screen. Tap the blue "Search" button in the bottom-left corner to initiate the search; relevant results appear in list form.

  • Download the app by tapping the "Free" icon next to the app's name, then tap "Install."

  • Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted, then select "OK." The app will automatically begin downloading.

Using iTunes

  • Open iTunes on your computer, then click "iTunes Store" on the left side of the program window beneath Store.

  • Select "App Store" from the top toolbar in the "iTunes Store" screen on the right side of the program window.

  • Search for an app using the "Search Store" field in the top-right corner of iTunes. Press "Enter" to execute the search.

  • Click "Great Free Apps" in the Quick Links menu on the right side of the program window to see suggestions for free apps. See more information about an app by clicking on its name; a screen will open displaying reviews and a description of the app.

  • Download an app by clicking the "Free" icon next to the app in the search results, or the "Free App" icon in the detailed preview.

  • Enter your Apple ID and password when prompted and click "Get." The app begins downloading.
