You can make your pet's own tag.

If your dog runs away or gets lost, a well-made ID tag can help you get him back quickly. Making your own pet tag can save you money and add a personalized touch to your pet's collar. And most importantly, it can provide customized information -- from basic ID details to medical or behavioral tips -- that can help the person who finds your pet keep him safe and help him get home more quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a piece of ribbon that is wide enough to wrap around the width of your dog's collar. Cut the ribbon long enough to accommodate all the information you want to include.

    • 2

Write your pet's information on the ribbon with a fabric pen. Every tag should include your pet's name along with your name, address and phone number. Include any additional information that may be useful for someone who finds your dog, such as "Allergic to normal dog food," or "Has not yet received rabies shot."

    • 3

Thread a needle with a 12-inch length of embroidery floss. Tie a knot in the end of the thread. Sew over the letters you marked on the ribbon using straight and back stitches.

    • 4

Wrap the finished ribbon around the collar and sew the edges so that the seam faces the back of the collar.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a dark colored embroidery floss with a light colored ribbon, or a light colored embroidery floss with a dark ribbon, to make your ID tag easier to read.

  • Consider having your pet microchipped in order to provide a permanent ID solution for your pet. A microchip along with an ID tag gives your pet the best chance possible to be identified and returned to you.
