How to Call China From the US Using Skype

Skype is perhaps best-known for its free instant messaging with video- and audio-chatting services, but it also offers cheap rates on calls to telephone numbers from your computer. As of the date of publication, you can use Skype to call any non-Skype number in China from the U.S. for 2.3 cents per minute--Skype-to-Skype calls are free. Skype provides two choices for phone calls, which must be made using Skype Credit: You can pay a monthly subscription fee for unlimited phone calls or pay by the minute if you intend to call China only on rare occasions.

  • Log into your Skype account.

  • Click the "Add Credit" link that appears directly under your Skype name in the top-left corner of the application window.

  • Select the type of Skype credit you want to purchase and follow the instructions. You will have to provide a credit card to buy Skype credit.

  • Click the "Dial Pad" icon in the top-right corner of the Skype application window.

  • Click the blue "S" icon and choose China from the drop-down menu to apply the "+96" country code to your phone number.

  • Enter the phone number you want to call, then press the green "Call" button. You will hear a ringing to signify that your call is going through. When your contact answers, you can begin speaking as during a regular phone call. To hang up your call, press the red "Hang up" button.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you plan to make lengthy calls to China on a regular basis, ask the person you are calling to download Skype and create a free account. You can use the free audio-calling feature with any other user on Skype.
