Light a fire quickly with a matchbook.

Joseph Pusey created the matchbook in 1889. Matchbooks are convenient to carry and valuable in various situations, such as on a camping trip and in emergencies. The all-in-one design includes everything you need to light a fire. There are several methods to use when lighting a matchstick from a matchbook including standard and stylish techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Separate one match from the group of matchsticks in the matchbook and tear it off from the base. Turn the matchbook over. Hold the matchstick between your thumb and index fingers, as close to the base of the head as possible, and press the head against the rough brown stripe. Do not press too hard or the stick will break. Draw the head of the matchstick down the length of the brown stripe quickly to light it. Move your fingers away from the head quickly when it lights to avoid a burn. Slide the head of the stick against the stripe again if it does not light immediately. If this is unproductive, turn the match around and try lighting the other side of the head.

Lift the front cover of the matchbook then fold it to the back. Ensure that the edge of the front cover is aligned with the bottom edge of the matchbook. Slide the head of the stick under the cover, until it rests on the rough brown stripe. Press the cover on the head of the matchstick then pull the matchstick out sharply. The stick will light as it emerges.

Hold the matchbook in one hand. Fold a match down and around the bottom of the matchbook until the head rests on the brown stripe. Press the head down with your thumb then slide it across the stripe quickly to light it.
