How to Compress a PDF With CutePDF Pro

Save

CutePDF Pro is a small application that enables you to create, manipulate and edit Portable Document Format (PDF) documents. CutePDF Pro functions in many ways just like its more expensive nemesis, Adobe Acrobat Pro. CutePDF Pro may be configured using several commands in the configuration file. One such command, the "/printer" command -- when placed in the configuration file -- will reduce the size of, or compress, the output PDF by as much as 50 percent.

  • Open Windows Explorer by right-clicking the Windows "Start" button and clicking "Open Windows Explorer." Make sure the CutePDF Pro application is not open.

  • Navigate to the location of the following file. Change the drive letter if the Program Files directory is on another drive:

    C:\Program Files\Acro Software\CutePDF Writer\PDFWrite.rsp

  • Right-click on the file and select "Open." Find the "Notepad" program option and click to open the file with Notepad.

  • Find the following line in the file:

    -dPDFSETTINGS=configuration

  • Type the following command (without quotes) after the word "configuration."

    "/printer"

  • Click "File" and then "Save" to save the command text file.

  • Open CutePDF and create a PDF document. Print the document to PDF by clicking "Print" and selecting the "CutePDF Driver" from the printer list. A file navigation window will appear. Type a name for the new output PDF and click "Save." The resulting PDF will be compressed by approximately 50 percent.
