How to Revive Old Honeysuckle Vines

How to Revive Old Honeysuckle Vines thumbnail
Restore the vigor of old honeysuckle vines with extensive pruning.

Honeysuckle vines grow rapidly, even when completely neglected. Abundant growth does not equal a healthy-looking vine, however, and over time the plants start to appear lanky and unattractive. Vines that aren't pruned regularly tend to develop abundant foliage on top while the bottoms remain nearly bare. Extensive pruning is the first step in reviving old honeysuckle. Providing plenty of water and extra nutrients helps to ensure that new, healthier growth returns quickly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Untangle the vines carefully from the structure on which they are climbing, and allow them to rest on the ground.

    • 2

Cut the oldest parts of the vine back to the ground.

    • 3

Prune one-third to one-half of the top branches back to within 1 to 2 feet of the ground.

    • 4

Reattach the remaining vines to the climbing structure with plant ties.

    • 5

Work 2 to 3 inches of organic compost into the surface of the soil with a spade.

    • 6

Add 2 inches of organic mulch around the bottom of the plants. Water whenever less than 1 inch of rain falls in a week during the first spring after heavy pruning.

    • 7

Pinch the tops of new growth to promote fuller foliage.
