When a family member, particularly a cousin, writes a character reference they are writing from a perspective that a manager, teacher or co-worker may not have. Companies, colleges and organizations look for candidates who have strong character references that emphatically state the character and work ethics of the candidate. Cousins have that advantage because of the family connection, experiences and natural desire to see another family member excel. When writing a letter for a cousin, the writer has to ensure that the letter addresses ability as well as character.

      Type the letter heading by indicating the date and move down two lines and type the address of the recipient of the letter. Begin the greeting with the recipient's name or a familiar statement, "To Whom It May Concern", when you do not know the name of the recipient. For example:

      Refer to your cousin's name in the first paragraph. Indicate the length of time that you have known your cousin. Provide details about your qualifications and credentials to demonstrate your level of knowledge and expertise. Include your degrees, special certifications and training that are related to the area where your cousin is seeking employment or membership.

      Provide the recipient of the letter with specific evidence of your cousin's qualifications. State in confident language your cousin's ability to perform under pressure, special projects your cousin has completed, special recognitions and awards that set your cousin apart from all of the other applicants. Note your cousin's degrees, certifications, previous work experience and performance.

      Indicate strong supporting facts about your cousin's character. Express their ability to communicate effectively. Tell the recipient of the letter about your cousin's leadership skills and interpersonal skills. Organizations want to know if applicants can work with a diverse workforce, lead in times of difficulty and foster an environment of teamwork.

      Close your letter with a reiteration of your support for your cousin's consideration for the organization, scholarship or job opening. Use statements like, "I provide my strongest recommendation", or "I recommend Jamie Brown without any reservations as a viable candidate for your program". This is your last chance to make the case for your cousin. Provide your contact information in case the recipient of the letter desires to contact your for more information. End the letter with a valediction such as "Sincerely" and place your name, and title, if applicable.
