How to Encourage Activity Pins for Webelos
A Webelos is a Cub Scout in the 4th or 5th grade. Cub Scouts are part of the Boy Scouts of America, where entry level Cub Scouts begin with Tigers. They are followed by Wolves, Bears and Webelos - the final phase of a Cub Scout before advancing to Boy Scouts. All levels of Cub Scouts work to earn various belt badges and pins. While Webelos are old enough to understand that earning activity pins is their responsibility, some need more support than others. There are several ways to encourage Webelos trying to earn pins.

1
Boost competition within the ranks of a Webelos den and Webelos pack to encourage the desire of scouts to earn activity pins. A den is the smaller group of boys that meet whereas the pack is a larger group encompassing several dens. Speak to Webelos at every den meeting and inquire of each scout, within clear earshot of each other, what steps he took to earn activity pins since the den last met. Use a kind tone and respectful voice at all times. Write down your findings on a dry-erase board with dry-erase markers for everyone to view.

2
Motivate kids to reach pin quotas by offering a reward for accomplishing an impressive milestone, such as 10 activity pins. Solicit donations from businesses for rewards that may include tickets to a nearby amusement park or movie passes.

3
Call your local newspaper or elementary school newsletter editor. Ask the editor if he has interest in printing a story about Weblos from your den in regard to the work that they are doing on a pin activity project. Tell the Webelos, if an editor agrees, that a story about their pin activity accomplishments could be printed in a newspaper or newsletter if they work very hard on earning activity pins.

4
Get together as a group and work on earning activity pins. Swim at someone's house or a city pool to earn the Aquanaut activity pin. Go to a park with your den and have a picnic while working on the Forester activity pin. Work activity pin ventures into den meetings whenever possible.
-
5
Praise Webelos often for their efforts in obtaining activity pins. Speak glowingly of the work they have done in front of others and never speak harshly to kids or express disappointment in their lack of success. Offer to help them meet their goals and you can rest assured that you have done your best.
