How Do I Replace the Door Latch in a Sharp Microwave?

Damon Koch

The door latch on a Sharp microwave oven engages with the catch on the body of the unit when the handle is activated. Over time and with constant use, the latch can be become dysfunctional. A dysfunctional latch can cause the microwave to be unsafe and must be replaced. A new latch is purchased online or locally from an authorized Sharp parts dealer. Replacing the latch requires two screwdrivers and is completed in less than hour.

  1. Turn off the supply of electricity to the microwave by unplugging it or shutting off the circuit breaker.

  2. Open the door on the microwave.

  3. Pry off the inside door panel using a standard screwdriver. Gently pry around the edges of the door panel with the screwdriver until the entire panel is loose. Work the panel off of the door, but be careful not to crack or break it.

  4. Unscrew the two to three screws that secure the latching mechanism to the door frame using a Phillips screwdriver. Notice the position of the latch so you can place the new latch in the same position. Remove the old latch once the screws have been removed.

  5. Set the new latch in place where the old one was removed and secure it with its screws. Tighten the screws with a Phillips screwdriver. Do not overdrive the screws.

  6. Snap the inner door panel back in place and turn on the electricity to the unit.
