Instructions

    • 1

Stretch a measuring tape across the front of the rod if the rod has no ball or decorative finial. The tape should extend from one end of the rod to the other. Write this number down. This is the width necessary for your curtain. Add another 6 inches to this number if you want the curtains to be fuller.

    • 2

Measure from the inside tip of one finial to the inside tip of the finial on the opposite side for decorator or custom rods, similarly to the method used on a standard rod. Just do not count the decorative end pieces when doing the measurement.

    • 3

Place the end of the measuring tape in the upper left hand corner of the window if you are measuring for a new rod. Stretch the tape across the window to the upper corner on the right side. Ensure that the tape is held straight along the top of the sill. Add at least 6 inches to to this number for your curtain and rod width; you can hang a curtain with more width if you want a fuller look.

Tips & Warnings

  • Adding extra width to the curtain will allow it to bunch across the rod as it hangs in the window. On average, between 6 to 12 additional inches should be enough for a pleated curtain, but if you want more depth and texture, you can select an even wider curtain.
