How to End a Skype Chat

Whether you're chatting with a friend using your webcam and Skype or using Skype as an instant messaging service, you can end your chat quickly and easily. While ending an instant message chat is as simple as closing the window and signing out of Skype, you'll need to end a video chat call by disconnecting the call, much like you would a typical phone call. This ensures that the chat has been completed and your friend can no longer hear or see you.

Instant Message Chat

  • Tell your friend that you'll be ending the chat. Then, click the "x" on the chat window.

  • Sign out of Skype, if necessary. If your friend messages you while you're not signed into Skype, the message will arrive when you sign in later.

  • Access your chat history by right-clicking on a friend's name and then selecting "Chat History." You can also delete the entire history, if you wish.

Video Chat

  • Tell your friend that you'll be signing out. Unlike instant messaging chat, once you disconnect, your friend will have to call again to speak to you.

  • Position your cursor at the bottom of the video chat window. Several options will appear. Click "End Call," which is denoted by a red phone icon. This will end the call.

  • Click the "x" at the top-right corner of the window to close the chat window completely.
