How to Make Bold in LaTeX

LaTeX is a document preparation system based on TeX, which was created by Donald Knuth and modified into LaTeX by Leslie Lamport. It is a markup language, which means that everything is entered as regular letters and numbers and symbols from the keyboard. Unlike word-processing software such as Word, it is not WYSIWYG, or What You See is What You Get. Adding bold to a LaTeX document requires inserting some simple code.

  • Enter the preamble of the document. At a minimum, this will include \documentstyle{}. Most common, perhaps, is \documentstyle{article}.

  • Begin the document with \begin{document}.

  • Put \textbf{ prior to the text you want in bold, and put } after it. For example, if you want "Peter" to be bold, put \textbf{Peter}.

  • End the document with \end{document}.
