How to Import a Word Document Into InDesign

Adobe InDesign is a popular tool for creating visual layouts for both printed and digital media. One helpful feature of InDesign is its ability to import files from other programs and incorporate them into your InDesign document. You can do this with Word files using the "Place" option from the file menu. When you import a Word document, you have several options available to ensure that the imported text looks exactly the way you envisioned.

  • Open an existing document or create a new one.

  • Click the "File" menu and choose "Place."

  • Choose "Replace Selected Item" to replace the contents of a frame with the contents of your Word document. If you want the imported document to appear in a new frame, deselect "Replace Selected Item."

  • Click "Show Import Options," browse to your Word document and double-click it.

  • Choose your preferred input options for your document. There are several available, including options to import the document's table of contents, index, footnotes or endnotes.

  • Click "OK" to import your Word document.
