Explore the Internet from your home computer by installing an internal modem. Internal modems are on add-on (expansion) cards that connect directly to the motherboard. The following instructions apply to an IBM-compatible computer using Windows 95 or 98.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Check for Available ISA or PCI Slots

  1. Step 1

Turn off and unplug the computer. Remove the cover.

  2. Step 2

Check the motherboard for available ISA or PCI slots (also called expansion slots). Your computer manual can help you identify the slots you have.

  3. Step 3

    Record this information.

  4. Buy a Modem

  5. Step 1

Buy an internal modem at your local computer store.

  6. Step 2

Determine if you want a PCI or ISA modem. Your decision depends on how many of each slot type you have available and what other devices you plan to add to the system. Also note that PCI modems are generally more expensive.

  7. Step 3

Look for a modem that has at least 28.8 kbps speed for Internet use, preferably 56 kbps; higher speeds will make Web browsing more enjoyable. Modems at 56 kbps are readily available and reasonably priced.

  8. Install Modem

  9. Step 1

Remove the modem card from its packaging.

  10. Step 2

Align the card to the matching ISA or PCI slot.

  11. Step 3

Remove the slot cover to allow the modem ports to be accessible from the outside of the computer.

  12. Step 4

Carefully insert the card into the slot and push firmly into place. Secure the card with a screw in the metal tab.

  13. Step 5

Replace the cover, plug in the power cord, and turn on the computer.

  14. Configure the Modem in Windows 95 or 98 Using Plug and Play

  15. Step 1

Attach one end of the modem cable to your phone jack and the end to the appropriate port on the modem (check the modem manual).

  16. Step 2

Use Windows 95 or 98 to automatically detect and configure the modem. If your modem comes with a floppy disk or CD, use the installation instructions that come with the modem. Some manufacturers prefer that you install the modem drivers through the control panel

  17. Configure the Modem in Windows 95 or 98 Using Control Panel

  18. Step 1

If Windows does not automatically detect the new modem, or you are using a disk or CD to install the modem drivers, use the Control Panel to configure the modem.

  19. Step 2

Click Start, point to Settings and click Control Panel.

  20. Step 3

    Double-click Add New Hardware.

  21. Step 4

Follow the prompts in the Add New Hardware wizard. Select Have a Disk and insert the disk or CD.

  22. Step 5

Use the Browse button to find the modem drivers (.drv) on your floppy drive or CD drive.

  23. Step 6

Follow the prompts to finishing configuring the modem.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you are grounded (touch safe metal, such as the computer frame) before touching the computer components. Static electricity can build up in your body and be discharged on the computer components, causing permanent damage to them.
