How to Change the Name of a Mac File

Mac OS X is a desktop operating system by Apple designed for use on Apple's Mac series of computers. Each file on a Mac computer is given a name. This name helps to identify the file to the user and other programs. You can change the name of a file on your Mac computer with a few mouse movements.

  • Open the Finder by clicking its icon on your dock.

  • Locate the directory holding your file by navigating to it in the Finder window.

  • Click your file once to select it.

  • Move the mouse cursor over the text below the icon; this is the file name.

  • Click and hold the mouse button down until the file text is selected and editable. Type the new file name, then click elsewhere on the screen to save your changes.
