How to Freeze Tortilla Shells

Save

Tortillas date back to Mayan times when peasants, according to legends, made corn-based tortillas for the kings. Today, these bread substitutes are made from corn or flour and come grilled, fried or baked. When buying in bulk or when preparing tortillas from scratch, you may need to freeze them for long-term storage. Tortillas freeze easily and maintain their freshness as long as you store them properly.

Things You'll Need

  • Freezer-safe, sealed container or plastic bag
  • Waxed paper
  • Place a piece of waxed paper between each tortilla if storing flat tortillas. This makes it easier to remove individual tortillas from the packaging without having to use the entire package.

  • Choose to either freeze the tortillas in their original packaging or in a freezer-safe, sealed container such as a freezer bag.

  • Place the stacked tortillas in the container and press out the excess air. Seal the packaging or freezer bag tightly. Place the tortillas in the freezer.

  • Set the shells in the refrigerator 1 to 2 days before you plan to use them to thaw them completely.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not thaw tortilla shells in the microwave.
