Fleas are pesky parasites that can quickly infest homes if not treated right away. They feed on the blood of their host, which is usually animals, but can also include humans. Fleas on animals can be killed with products such as Frontline or other flea treatments. Wash all bedding, clothes and other washable items in hot water to kill any fleas living in the materials. For the treatments to be effective, you also need to treat your furniture, carpet and floors. Borax can be used on wood floors to treat a flea infestation in your home.
Things You'll Need
- Vacuum cleaner
Sprinkle borax on wood floors around the entire house. Borax can also be sprinkled on carpet and furniture. Test a small area before covering your floors in borax to ensure no damage will occur.
Vacuum up the borax after several hours. Leave the house while you let the borax do its job. Borax will kill adult fleas instantly upon contact. Throw the vacuum bag in a plastic trash bag and tie tightly to seal it completely. Throw it away immediately outside.
Wait several days and repeat the process. Borax does not kill eggs, so treating your home with borax every few days is important to avoid a reinfestation. Flea eggs hatch after two weeks, so repeat the process for several weeks to ensure all of the fleas have been eliminated.
Tips & Warnings
- Keep babies and animals clear of borax.
- Do not confuse borax with boric acid.
