How To Tape an Aluminum Bat

How To Tape an Aluminum Bat thumbnail
Grip tape helps you keep a tight hold on the bat.

Aluminum bats last a long time if maintained properly. While most aluminum bats are purchased with safety grip already in place, that is not always the case. If the bat does already have safety grip, that grip will likely wear out after frequent use. Grip tape that appears worn, is unraveling or lifting from the bat is unsafe and against regulations in many leagues. Replace your own grip tape to save time and money.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the old grip tape if there is any by peeling away as much as you can.

    • 2

Clean the neck of your aluminum bat with adhesive remover to remove all adhesive from the old grip tape. Let the bat dry completely.

    • 3

Measure the bat starting just above the knob and draw a pencil line at the point where you want your new tape to stop. The Amateur Softball Association of America does not permit grip tape to fall below 10 inches or above 15 inches. If you play in a league, check the rules.

    • 4

Apply the end of the tape to the bat, starting just above the knob at the neck of the bat.

    • 5

Wrap it around the bat in a spiral, allowing the tape to slightly overlap so as to not leave gaps. Pull the tape tight as you wrap.

    • 6

Cut the tape at an angle with scissors or a box cutter when you reach the pencil mark.

    • 7

Wrap a small piece of tape around the top and bottom of the taped section to make clean lines at the ends of the safety grip.

    • 8

Press the tape with your fingers to ensure the edges of the tape are sealed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Check with your league for rules on safety grips before you get started so you don't end up with an illegally taped bat.

  • Most leagues do not allow shiny or smooth tapes, such as electrical tape.
