How to Format a Letter to a Judge
It is important to properly format a letter to a judge whenever sending an official document or request to the court. Include the words "The Honorable" in front of the name when addressing the envelope. This is a title that has been specifically given to all judges.

Include the judge's full name and mailing address on the envelope.

Type or write your name, address, and today's date at the top-right corner of the letter.

Begin your letter by addressing the judge correctly. Write "The Honorable," followed by the judge's name full name and address. Write this inside address in the top-left of the letter.

Start your letter by writing the words "Dear Judge," followed by a colon.

Explain your reason for writing the letter. State if you are introducing yourself at the beginning of a case, what your intention is, and the next court date for your case.

Include a brief description of the parties involved in the case, along with the case number. If you are making a request, explain why the judge should grant it.

Include any requests for official court documents, such as court transcripts. Also specify to whom the documents should be sent to if you are requesting them to be sent to another individual.

End the body of the letter with a "Thank you., " then close the letter with "Sincerely," followed by a comma, then your full name on the next line. Sign your signature first, then type or print your name on the next line.
