How to File a Police Report With the LAPD

File a police report to get your investigation started.

If you have recently been the victim of a crime in the Los Angeles area, it is critical that you file a police report with the LAPD. A police report marks the official beginning of the investigation into the matter. There are several ways to file a police report with the LAPD.

Instructions

1. Write down as much information as you can at the scene of the incident. If you are in an accident, for instance, you will want the other driver's contact information, driver's license number, and insurance information, as well as the names and contact numbers of all available witnesses.

2. Record the details surrounding the crime on a piece of paper or in a notebook. This information will help you with your official report.

3. Visit the closest LAPD precinct station to file a police report in person. You will be assigned an officer who can assist you with the report-filing process.

4. File a report with the responding officer if one is dispatched to the scene because of a 9-1-1 call.

5. Call the LAPD directly at 1-877-ASK-LAPD (5273) to get information and file a report over the phone.
