How to Get a Blogger Domain

Save

Blogger (interchangeable with Blogspot) is a free blogging platform owned and operated by Google. Blogger blogs are extremely customizable and allow unlimited updates and content, but the default URL for a Blogger blog is a sub-domain of the Blogspot domain and looks like http://yourdomain.blogspot.com. If you want to get rid of "blogspot" from your Blogger URL you must purchase a custom domain and assign the domain to your blog. Fortunately Google makes it possible to directly purchase the domain through Blogger and automatically assign the new domain to your blog.

  • Open your Web browser and visit the Blogger login page. Enter your Google email address and password into the appropriate fields and click "Sign in." You will enter the dashboard area of your Blogger account.

  • Click the Settings link next to the blog you wish to acquire a domain for in the Manage Blogs area of your account dashboard.

  • Click the Publishing link at the top of the page.

  • Click the Custom Domain link at the top of the page.

  • Input the desired domain name you want to use for your Blogger blog into the "What address would you like your blog to have" field. Click the ".com" drop-down menu and select the extension you wish to use (such as .com, .net, .org, .info or .biz). Note that your domain name cannot contain spaces or special characters, but can include numbers, letters, underscores and hyphens.

  • Click "Check Availability" to ensure that this domain name is available. If it is, you will arrive at another page where you can purchase the domain through Google. The price includes a one-year registration. Click "Continue to registration" if you wish to continue and purchase the selected domain.

  • Enter your personal information into the fields provided. Note that this is not optional and should be as accurate as possible. Personal information includes full name, email address, physical address and phone number.

  • Place a check mark next to "I have read the eNom Universal Terms of Service" and click "Proceed to Google Checkout."

  • Enter your credit card billing information into the fields provided and click "Agree and Continue."

  • Review your information and click "Place your order now" to purchase the domain and automatically move your Blogger blog to the new domain. Note that it may take up to three days for the blog to transition to the new domain.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you already own a domain you can link it to your blog instead of purchasing a new domain.
