Toys that have been manufactured in another country such as China and shipped across the world may have a pungent odor. Cleaning the toy will help remove the smell. Use natural products that will neutralize or remove the odor rather than chemical fragrances that will simply mask the smell. Use natural ingredients that will not harm the children if they ingest the residue. The smell will eventually dissipate if you keep the toy in a well-ventilated area.
Things You'll Need
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Paper towels
Cleaning Soft Toys
Sprinkle baking soda over the entire surface of the toy. Baking soda is a natural odor absorber that is food grade and completely non-toxic.
Work the baking soda into the toy, using the toothbrush to work deeply into the toy's fur or nap of the fabric.
Let the baking soda sit overnight or for several hours, then shake it off into a trash can.
Comb the toy to remove all of the baking soda.
Repeat the process if the smell is still noticeable.
Cleaning Hard Toys
Remove the batteries from the toy.
Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar. White vinegar is a natural odor neutralizer that is food grade and completely non-toxic.
Spray the white vinegar over the entire toy. Let it sit for several minutes, then wipe it off.
Repeat the process if the smell is still apparent.
