How to Find Downloading Speed

One of the advertising draws of Internet service providers are the high download and upload speeds offered. Higher transfer speeds cost more. You can test your upload and download speed to verify that your ISP is giving you the transfer speeds you pay for. Internet speed test utilities download a data packet from a remote server and re-upload it to determine speed.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect to the Internet. If you're on a wireless connection, ensure you have the strongest signal strength possible by moving closer to the router or eliminating potential blockages of the wireless signal: physical obstructions or electronic devices emitting disrupting electromagnetic radiation. Move your mouse over the Network Connections icon in your system tray to determine your current signal strength; you should see four or five green bars.

    • 2

Open your Web browser, and navigate to one of the following sites: speedtest.net, speakeasy.net or testinternetspeed.org.

    • 3

Choose a server location on the map if the site provides the option to do so. For best results, choose the server closest to your location by clicking on the icon (a radio tower or computer server). Test servers are typically located in major cities, so pick the city closest to you.

    • 4

      Start the test.

    • 5

Wait for the test to complete. Note the download and upload speeds you get. Test three times to get an idea of your average data transfer speeds.
