Save

A maintenance man is responsible for performing maintenance services. Requirements for maintenance men vary according to the company and state where the worker is employed. A maintenance man must have construction skills such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, and roofing. The maintenance man’s job involves a variety of duties that may include plumbing, fixing or painting doors or repairing specialized equipment. Those interested in this career may specialize in one field, such as plumbing or carpentry, or these workers can perform several different duties. Maintenance men can become employed at cafeterias, schools, hospitals or other facilities that require repair services.

  • Obtain a high school diploma or GED. High school students interested in this career should take courses in mechanical drawing, electricity, woodworking and mathematics. Expect most employers to require a high school diploma before becoming employed.

  • Take classes at a vocational school. Enroll in courses that include hands on work involving electrical systems, repairing heating and air conditioning systems or painting. Expect vocational schools to provide hands on training.

  • Join an association. Research associations, such as the Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals (S.M.R.). The S.M.R. provides educational workshops, conferences, networking opportunities and other resources to benefit members. Take advantage of training seminars that allow workers to periodically update their skills.

  • Obtain a certification. Research certification programs according to the facility where employment is sought. Choose a certification program that includes technical courses and training related to maintenance and repair, such as the Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians. Expect to obtain a certificate after successfully passing a multiple choice written exam given by the certificate training facility of choice.

  • Create a professional resume. Post the resume on a job board, such as Jobcentral.com. Ensure that the resume lists all training and certification obtained. Create an account and allow employers to search for the resume based on skills and location.
