Homemade menu covers can be used for a small restaurant, as well as for events such as a dinner fundraiser or just a special occasion meal at home. Menu covers should be kept simple and low-cost. A good font, logo and restaurant name are enough to be effective. You can make menu covers on your own inkjet printer, or with the help of a local professional.
Things You'll Need
- Plastic report shields or covers
Buy a sturdy card stock if you will be printing your menus from your home computer. Use a word-processing program to create your cover. Write the name of your restaurant in a font that fits your theme. An Italian menu may call for a beautiful script, while a modern or eclectic establishment could go with a funky, urban font.
Design your restaurant logo. Have a professional designer do this for you if you're able to, or else use a free logo design program such as Logo Snap, Logo Maker, or Logo Ease. Cut and paste this logo onto your menu cover document, positioning it around the restaurant title however you like.
Print out your menu cover. The paper size and menu design size must match. If you're using card stock, you must adjust your printer to the extra thickness. If you do not have an inkjet printer, proofread your document carefully and email it to a logo print shop.
Place each cover inside a plastic report sheet protector, or in a standard restaurant menu cover, available online or at restaurant supply stores. Add a blank sheet of paper in the same color as your front menu page into the back of the cover holder, for a complete and uniform look. You can include your restaurant address and phone number on this back page.
Create a customized message on the back or inside of the menu cover if you are creating a homemade menu for a special family dinner, or an event such as a wedding or anniversary. Add personal touches such as a photograph of the guest of honor, a sentimental poem or a quote that fits the occasion.
Tips & Warnings
- Have a friend or family member proofread your menu after you do, and before it is printed. This will save time and resources, and avoid an error.
- Keep it simple. The best-looking menus are free of large amounts of text and images. Your guests' focus should be on the enticing foods listed on the inside.
