How to Use the Outers Gun Cleaning Tools Set
Founded in 1934, Outers is a leading manufacturer and provider of gun care tools, chemical and solvents. The company offers a number of kits that can help a shooter clean almost any gun. As many shooters realize, a clean gun is a safer gun. Guns that are allowed to get dirty may misfire, as well as not shoot as accurately as when they are clean. Many of the Outers kits have the tools required to clean more than one caliber of gun, which can save some money.

1
Make sure the gun is unloaded. For rifles make sure there are no cartridges in the chamber or in the magazine. If you are cleaning a revolver, swing the cylinder out and make sure it is empty. For a shotgun, open the breech and check the barrels, and make sure the magazine is empty. If it is an automatic or pump action shotgun, remove the barrel.

2
Place a thick layer of newspapers on your work surface. Select and assemble, if necessary, the cleaning rod for your gun from the kit. The cleaning rod has a handle, brushes and cleaning tips that attach to it. The brush is used first, and then is followed by a cleaning tip.

3
Dampen a cleaning patch from the kit with the included solvent. Wipe this pad over the cleaning rod, and saturate a brush with solvent. Slide the cleaning rod into the bore, making sure the rod does not touch the sides of the gun barrel. Keep the rod straight, and work it up and down the barrel at least 10 times to remove all debris.
-
4
Remove the brush and attach a cleaning tip in its place. Place a cleaning patch from the kit to the tip and saturate the patch completely with solvent. Run the soaked patch through the barrel to wipe out loosened debris. When the patch gets dirty, replace it with another one, and repeat this step until the patch comes out clean.
-
5
Use more clean patches moistened with solvent to wipe down the gun action, slide mechanism or bolt, and then wipe dry with another patch or a clean rag. Pay special attention to the breech area of the barrel, the end of the firing pin and the face of the bolt.
-
6
Use the gun oil from the kit next, saturating more of the cleaning pads with the oil. Attach an oiled pad to the cleaning tip, and run it though the barrel, making sure all surfaces get a light covering of oil. Wipe oil onto all moving parts, being careful to use it sparingly on revolver cylinders. Wipe off any excess oil.

Tips & Warnings
Fingerprints can cause rapid rusting on a gun. A light wipe-down with oil after handling is recommended.
