A nursing contract protects both parties.

A contract is a legal and binding document, so it's important to get it right. When writing a nursing contract, it's imperative to realize that it represents an agreement between the nurse and employer that is based on rights, liabilities and responsibilities. Details must be in writing because it serves as a record. If the nurse says, "But you told me. . ., " you immediately refer to the contract.

Instructions

    • 1

Start with the nurse's job description. This forms the basis of the contract as it outlines her duties and responsibilities. Include the standards that are to be followed, such as those laid out by the Joint Commission International Accreditation Standards for Hospitals, 4th Edition.

    • 2

Date the contract. This is essential as a contract is a legal document and takes effect from the date it is signed. A nursing contract without a date might not stand up in court.

    • 3

Identify the start date, the hospital or clinic, hours, salary, maintaining your license, benefits, holidays and bonuses. Specify if there are penalties for lateness or missed days.

    • 4

Leave margins that are at least an inch wide on all four sides of the page. Nursing contracts can be faxed of scanned, so it's important to leave room for amendments and to allow for the extra space required for scans and faxes.

    • 5

Write the contract in easy-to-understand language. Avoid run-on sentences; don't use a big word when a small one will do. Also, be careful to avoid archaic medical terms such as "nursing sister."

    • 6

Use straightforward numbering. If the paragraphs need to be numbered, stick to 1,2,3, rather than trying to sub-divide them.

    • 7

Leave the nursing contract for a day or so and then review it to make sure all points are covered. Edit the contract for spelling or grammatical mistakes, and print a final copy.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have any doubts about your nursing contract, have a lawyer review it. This gives you peace of mind that the contract is done properly and that it would stand up in court if necessary.
