How to Make Your Own Mobi Wrap

A mobi wrap can make carrying your baby easier.

A mobi wrap carrier is a baby carrier that distributes the baby's weight over your entire back and shoulders to make it easier to carry your baby. It is simple to put on and doesn't require any fasteners. A mobi wrap comes in one size, making it easy for mom, dad and other caregivers to use. Carrying your baby in a mobi wrap allows you to stay close to your baby and helps the baby feel secure and soothed. The mobi wrap is machine washable and fits children from birth to 35 lbs.

Instructions

  1. Purchase Fabric and Thread

    • 1

Buy 5 1/2 yards of Jersey knit fabric. Jersey is what a medium weight t-shirt is made from. Other knits provide varying amounts of stretch and may stretch too much or not enough, depending on the construction of the fabric. You will have enough fabric to make two wraps. An extra wrap is nice to have in case one is dirty or you need a quick gift for a friend.

    • 2

Wash the fabric before beginning any sewing to avoid shrinkage later.

    • 3

Cut your fabric in half lengthwise. Depending on the width of the original fabric off the bolt, width varies from 20 inches to 30 inches. Thinner wraps are recommended because they are less bulky. If your fabric is 60 inches wide, you may be able to divide it into thirds and have enough for three wraps, each 20 inches wide and 5 1/2 yards long.

    • 4

Sew the smaller piece to one end of the larger piece with right sides together, matching edges and using a 1/2-inch seam allowance (this may not matter unless you are using a patterned fabric). Stitch again close to your first stitching line for extra strength.

    • 5

Repeat Step 2 with the other long piece, stitching to the other side of the smaller piece. The coordinating fabric is now in the middle of your two long pieces.

    • 6

Turn your wrap over and stitch the seams down so that they lie flat.

    • 7

Fold your wrap in half lengthwise, then again the other way so that all four corners are matched up. Make sure you are not cutting through your middle fold in either direction.

    • 8

Taper the last 15 inches (lengthwise) down to 5 inches, which is 2 1/2 inches away from the fold. Round the corners. This will balance the taper and curve of your wrap. If it is easier, you may fold it in half in either direction just once and cut and round only two edges at a time.

    • 9

Your wrap is now usable. Knit fabrics do not fray, so you do not need to finish your edges; however, to keep the edges from rolling, and to protect from over stretching and provide a finished look to your project, run all of the edges through a serger. Serging stretches, which means that you won't break your stitches when using your wrap.

Tips & Warnings

  • When using the mobi wrap, check your baby often to be sure he/she has proper head support and breathing room. In addition, as with all baby carriers you should keep one hand on baby at all times to ensure safety.
