How to Remove Clams From Their Shells
The unique texture of a clam can be enjoyed raw or cooked. Either way, you will need to pry the clam from its protective shell before you can bite into it. The removing of the shell is known as shucking, and is similar to the technique used when opening oysters. Preparing shellfish is all about freshness. Lay a towel on the palm of your left hand and place the clam on this towel. The seam opening should face your thumb.

Insert a thin knife into the tightly closed seam of the clam.

Twist the wrist holding the knife like you are turning a screwdriver clockwise. The blade will pry the shell open so that you can remove the clam.

Remove the top half of the clam shell.

Slide the knife under the clam to cut the muscle away from the shell. Remove the clam and enjoy.
