How to Make a Wrist Band With Pockets

How to Make a Wrist Band With Pockets thumbnail
Make wristbands to wear during your favorite sports activity.

Make a wristband to wear out walking or jogging and add a pocket to the wristband to hold a miniature music player or a little bit of change. Make the wristband from a terrycloth fabric in a color that matches your jogging outfit and add a zipper to the wristband pocket to make sure nothing falls out while you are on the go. The wristbands are easy to make, but the pocket zippers require tiny stitching in a small amount of fabric, so novice wristband makers should take a little bit of time to practice making a zipper pocket beforehand.

Things You'll Need

  • Terrycloth fabric
  • 2-inch-wide elastic
  • Sewing pins

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of your wrist. Cut a rectangular piece of terrycloth to measure 2 ½ inches by the circumference of your wrist plus ½ inch. Cut a second piece of terrycloth with the same measurements.

    • 2

Cut a piece of 2-inch-wide elastic that measures the circumference of your wrist. Measure it ¼ to ½ inch smaller for a wristband that fits snugly on your wrist.

    • 3

Place the piece of elastic centered on top of the wrong side of one of the terrycloth rectangles. Pin the piece of elastic in place. Pull gently on the elastic as you are pinning it in place to make a tighter fitting wristband, but do not pull too tightly to avoid cutting off circulation when wearing the wristband.

    • 4

Make pockets for the wristband. Cut a 2-by-1 ¾-inch rectangle from extra terrycloth. Locate the center of the 2-inch length and insert fabric sheers approximately 1/4 inch away from the bottom and make a slit until you reach 1/4 inch away from the top. Unzip the 1 ¼-inch-long zipper and sew it in place on either side of the slit on the wrong side of the fabric with the zipper facing outward to the right side of the fabric. Repeat this step to make more than one pocket for the wristband.

    • 5

Place the pocket on the good side of the plain terrycloth rectangle and sew around the edges using a straight stitch.

    • 6

Lay the pocketed terrycloth rectangle down with the good side facing upward. Place the joined elastic and terrycloth rectangles on top with the elastic side facing upward.

    • 7

Pin the pieces in place and sew three sides of the rectangles together, leaving one short end open. Insert your fingers into the middle of the fabric and pull the fabric right side out. Sew the open end of the fabric to the other short end to form the wristband.
