Write out a topic sentence or statement. This will be the top of your flyer, so it needs to be straightforward and clear. For example, if you are advertising auditions for a school play, you may choose to label your poster "Theater Auditions" in bold letters. You want the recipient of the flyer to know exactly what you are advertising.

Write out a template of your flyer and decide exactly what you want it to say. Create your flier once you have decided what will go on it. You can do this by using marking pens or by typing out your flyer on a computer. Any word processing program will work and allow you to change font size and style. Enter your text below your topic statement in a smaller font or print. Include all of the information that is needed for your advertisement or announcement. Consider adding in an eye-catching border around your text.

Add in a visual by either drawing a picture or downloading a photo. Clip art is widely available on-line and is easy to use in flyers --- you simply copy and paste the image into your document. Visuals help people grasp your concept or event quickly, and may grab their interest.

Proofread your work and double check the information and/or dates the flyer lists. Print out one flyer and ensure that it looks appropriate. Once you are satisfied, print out the remainder of your flyers and get ready to post them up or pass them out. Print your flyer on standard printer paper. You can use colored printer paper, but choose lighter shades so that your text and visuals show up clearly. Plan how many fliers you would like to distribute and whether they will be full pages. You can print two flyers on one page and cut the pages to create smaller flyers, if desired. If you did not use a computer program for your flyer, then you will need to make copies.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider printing out one flyer and showing it to the school administration; before you do a major printing it is a good idea to make sure it is appropriate and allowed.

  • Keep the wording at a minimum. Bold, larger print will catch the eye more than smaller print.

  • Make sure your flyer has one obvious purpose and theme.

  • Do not add more than two visuals, as this will clutter the page.
