How to Child-Proof Windows
Many children every year fall through window screens. Screens are designed to prevent bugs from coming through the window, not to bear the weight of a child. If a child is present, close the window to prevent him from falling through the screen. Some children, however, can and will open windows. To prevent a child from opening the window in the first place, follow a few childproofing tips and install the appropriate locking mechanism on the interior of the window. Does this Spark an idea?

Move cribs, furniture and any other object that a child could stand on away from the window.

Open windows from the top, not the bottom, whenever possible.

Place window stops, also called wedges, in any window within the child's reach. Stops are appropriate for double-hung and horizontal sliding windows. To install, remove the adhesive back from the wedge. Insert the stop wedge between the top and bottom, or the left and right side window panes in front of the window frame. Press the wedge to secure the adhesive backing to the frame. The wedge will prevent the child from pushing the window open.

Purchase guards that are the appropriate size for the window and that adults and older children can unlock easily in case of a fire. Windows guards look similar to bars except they fasten to the interior of the window seal and have bars that are no more than 4 inches apart.

Adjust the width of the guard to match the window width.

Screw two wood screws through the two screw holes, on the left and right side posts of the guard, through the window frame with a Phillips screwdriver.

Press down the two release buttons on one side of the guard grill and insert that side into the appropriate holes on the side posts.

Release the buttons and repeat the process to insert the other side of the guard grill.
