The Michigan Bridge Card helps Michigan residents who are struggling to put food on the table.

The Michigan Bridge Card has replaced food stamps and checks for needy families in the state. The card, which functions as a debit card, can be used by families to buy food and access money at some 4,4000 retailers and 4,000 ATMs across the state. State officials make the Bridge Card available to clients of the Department of Human Services (DHS) who are eligible for food assistance.

Instructions

  1. Getting the process started

    • 1

Go to your local DHS office to pick up a Bridge Card application or speak with a DHS representative. Each county in Michigan has a DHS office and appointments are not needed to fill out the application. State officials also suggest DHS clients apply online for a Bridge Card (mibridges.michigan.gov/access/). Senior citizens and disabled Michigan residents are also eligible for Bridge Cards. If you are homebound, DHS will arrange to have someone come to your home and assist you with the application. When you return the Bridge Card application, you may need an appointment with a DHS specialist.

    • 2

Provide information to DHS on your citizenship, assets, income, and expenses on the application. You will need to include family members living with you. Much of this information will be asked for on the application. This is required information in order for DHS employees to determine eligibility for a Bridge Card. Proof of U.S. citizenship or an acceptable alien status is required to receive food or cash help through a Bridge card.

    • 3

Talk with a DHS specialist to help determine your benefits after you have completed the assistance application. Once your application is received, DHS is required to act on requests for food assistance within 30 days. The specialist will tell you where you can use the Bridge card and what types of food items it can be used to buy. For instance, it cannot be used in most restaurants. The bridge card cannot be used to buy alcohol or tobacco products.

    • 4

Look for your Bridge Card in the mail once you are approved for food and cash assistance. If you are disabled and have chosen an authorized representative to use the card, it will still come to your mailing address so that you maintain control over the card. The Bridge Card will include directions on how to activate the card and where you may use it.

Tips & Warnings

  • Michigan residents who are age 60 and older and demonstrate financial need, may be eligible for a Bridge Card to pay for food so their limited funds can be used for medicine.

  • Failing to report an increase in income while using a Michigan Bridge Card is considered fraud and may result in criminal prosecution.
