How to Research a Domain

Domain names are characters, words or phrases that you type into a browser's address bar to visit a website. These domain names are translated into Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, which are a set of unique numbers assigned to any computer that connects to the Internet. Two different computers, using different IP addresses, can't use the same domain name. If you want to register a domain name for your website, then you have to do some research to check the availability of your desired domain name.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a domain name to research. It's best to choose a word or phrase that succinctly encompasses what your site is about.

    • 2

Go to a domain availability search engine (see Resources). These sites check the availability of any domain name you want, and they usually also suggest alternate domain names based on your initial search.

    • 3

Enter a domain name in the text box.

    • 4

Press the "Search" button to receive information about the domain name you're researching. Some websites will automatically search as you type, and you don't have to do anything except type in your desired domain name.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the domain name you want is taken, you can try to buy it if the owner is willing to sell. Domain names have to be renewed regularly, usually once a year. So frequently check any taken domain names you want in case the owner hasn't renewed.
