How to Record Sound on Mac OS X

The QuickTime Player in Mac OS X is best known as a video-playing application; however, it has several other uses. QuickTime Player X, released with the Snow Leopard operating system, can play audio files and capture screen recordings. It can also record video using the built-in camera of a Mac and record audio using the built-in Mac microphone or a connected third-party microphone.

      Go to the Applications folder and open "QuickTime Player."

      Select "New Audio Recording" from the "File" menu. A recording window opens on the screen.

      Click the expansion triangle on the right side of the recording window to adjust the input, quality and save location. Select the desired microphone input device and the desired quality. Select "Choose" under "Save To" to select a save location for the file.

      Click the "Record" icon in the center of the recording window to start recording audio.

      Click the "Stop" icon in the center of the recording window to end the recording. The audio file saves to the location you chose.
