How to Tie 2 Hooks to a Fly Line

Fish a two-hook dropper rig on a fly line to entice fish.

Tying two hooks to a fly line is commonly referred to as fishing a dropper line. Two flies are tied to the tippet at the end of the fly line to increase the odds of a strike. A combination of flies such as a dry fly and a nymph are used, with one often acting as and attractor for the other. Flies are tied in tandem so that one is presented ahead or above the other in the water.

Things You'll Need

• Fly line with leader and tippet
• Dry fly
• Tippet material
• Scissors
• Nymph

Instructions

1. Tie a dry fly such as a Royal Wulff or terrestrial grasshopper to the end of the tippet line with an Improved Clinch knot. Moisten the knot before pulling it tight and trim excess line from the free end of the knot with scissors.

2. Cut a 12- to 15-inch length of tippet material from a filler spool with scissors to serve as a dropper. Choose the same size tippet material as tied on the end of the fly line.

3. Tie one end of the tippet dropper to the bend of the dry or terrestrial fly with an Improved Clinch knot. Moisten the knot, pull it tight and trim excess line with scissors.

4. Choose a nymph to tie onto the end of the dropper. Select a nymph pattern such as a Bead Head Prince or one based on personal preference or time of year.

5. Tie the nymph onto the end of the dropper with an Improved Clinch knot. Moisten the knot before pulling it tight and trim excess line from the free end of the knot with scissors.
