Most creditors will require a DUNS number when applying for business credit.

Developed by Dun & Bradstreet, a DUNS or D-U-N-S number is a unique number identifier for a business or company. A DUNS number is used to determine credit worthiness when a business or company is applying for business credit. Dun & Bradstreet keeps a record of all credit activity filed under each company's DUNS number. Introduced in 1963, a DUNS number is available to all business entities at no charge and can be obtained by following a few simple steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Visit the Dun & Bradstreet website and locate the "D&B D-U-N-S Number" tab along the top of the page.

    • 2

Search the D&B database to make sure your company does not already have a DUNS number on file. Enter your business name, city and state in the field provided and click "Next."

    • 3

Click "Get Started" in the bottom right corner if your company does not have a file in the D&B database.

    • 4

Complete the required information such as the business name, address and other pertinent information needed to complete the application process and click "Submit."

    • 5

Wait to receive your DUNS number. It can take up to 30 days to receive your DUNS number. Once you receive your DUNS number, begin building a credit profile for your business.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can request to have D&B start a credit profile for your business for an additional charge.
