Do-It-Yourself Ski Racks

Ski racks allow you to let skis dry when not in use.

Ski racks store skis in out of the way, convenient places. They are often mounted on the walls of closets or garages and add benefits to an organized home. They hold the skis by pairs. The bottom of the skis are placed against each other, and then they are held up by the front ends that slant away from each other. A versatile ski rack holds down hill skis, as well as cross country skis.

Things You'll Need

• Tape measure
• Pencil
• Straight-edge
• Pine board, 2-by-6-by-34-inches
• 8 pine dowels, 3/4-by-7-inches
• Drill
• Drill bit, 3/4-inch
• Screw gun
• 10 wood screws, 3-inch
• Stud finder
• Level

Instructions

1. Lay a 34-inch pine board on a flat surface. Draw a line across the board that is centered, 3 inches away from each 34-inch edge.

2. Draw two "X" letters that are 2 inches away from both ends of the line. Head towards the center throughout this process. Draw another pair that are 2 inches away from the first, heading towards the center of the board. Draw another pair that are 8 inches away from each of the last drawn, and then finally one more pair that are 2 inches towards the center from the last pair.

3. Drill a 3/32-inch pilot hole through each "X", and through the board. Drill a 1-inch deep, 3/4-inch-diameter hole into each pilot hole. The 3/4-inch holes are all on the same side of the board.

4. Place a dowel inside each hole and screw through the pilot holes on the opposite sides to secure the dowels.

5. Find studs in the wall with your stud finder and position your ski rack over the studs. Use your level to ensure the rack is horizontal. Screw the rack to the wall using your last four screws. Position your pairs of skis between each pair of dowels. The bottoms of the skis should be together for this.
