How to Remove Brave Sentry

Brave Sentry is a spyware program that was discovered as part of the WMF or VML exploits in 2005 and 2006. It utilizes specific security vulnerabilities in Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Server. Brave Sentry acts like an antivirus program by continually notifying you that you are infected. Meanwhile, Brave Sentry is running in the background constantly, even in Safe Mode. This makes completely removing Brave Sentry difficult, since programs like Ad-Aware and Windows Defender cannot remove it completely. SmitRem, which is the only recommended removal tool for Brave Sentry, combined with some searching and deleting will remove Brave Sentry.

Instructions

    • 1

Download the smitRem removal tool (see Resources). This tool removes a variety of infections including those caused by Brave Sentry.

    • 2

Locate your downloaded smitRem files and extract them to your desktop.

    • 3

Click on the "Start" menu, and then right-click on "My Computer" or "Computer," depending on which version of Windows you are using. Select "Properties" from the pop-up menu.

    • 4

Select the "System Restore" tab at the top of the "System Properties" window. Check the box labeled "Turn off System Restore on all drives." Click "OK" at the bottom, and wait for "System Restore" to turn off.

    • 5

Restart your computer and boot to "Safe Mode." Safe mode is usually accessed by pressing a particular "F" key at the start of the boot process and then selecting "Safe Mode" as the booting option. Check your owner's manual or contact the manufacturer if you are unsure which "F" key to press.

    • 6

Open the "smitRem" folder on your desktop, and then double-click "RunThis.bat" to start the removal process. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the removal process, using the "Space Bar" to continue.

Tips & Warnings

  • Always keep your antivirus software updated to help reduce the risk of infection by viruses and spyware.

  • Free antivirus software is available if you do not have updated software (see Resources).

  • An antivirus program will not prevent you from infection; it will only reduce the risk. Always be careful what you are downloading and/or installing programs on your computer, as authorizing these actions can override your antivirus program.
