How to Use the Same Baby Name As a Best Friend

How to Use the Same Baby Name As a Best Friend thumbnail
Don't let baby names end your friendship.

Naming babies can be a complex task. Before a child is even born, parents set about choosing a name that will reflect positive personality traits, sound nice and stay with their child throughout life. Sometimes parents face the added task of coordinating a new child's name with those of older siblings or of honoring certain relatives without offending others. If two friends choose to name their children the same name, the children and parents may feel either connected and honored or confused and cheated. Focus on maintaining friendships by acting with respect and being flexible.

Instructions

    • 1

Be open and honest about your choices. Before your baby arrives, tell your friend that you plan to use the same name as his child. Explain your personal reasons for choosing the name, apologize if you upset your friend and then ask for your friend's support. Make it clear that you want to remain close and that your are not "stealing" your friend's baby name, but rather you like it so much that you can't help but use it yourself.

Give your child a dynamic middle name. Make sure the middle name is something you like as much as your child's first name. If it becomes too confusing having two children who are close with the same name, your child may choose to begin going by her middle name.

Experiment with nicknames. If you are going to give your child the same name as your best friend's kid, then think of ways you can make the name unique. For example, the name Alexander has multiple variations: Alex, Al, Lex and Xander. Therefore, boys who share the name Alexander may actually be called by significantly different nicknames.
