How to Remove Melted Plastic From an Electric Burner

Setting anything plastic on a hot stove can result in burnt-on residue.

Electric stoves can be dangerous when hot for many reasons, but one surprisingly common problem is a plastic utensil, dish or other plastic item accidentally getting set on the stove and melting. This melted residue can be extremely difficult to remove and may cause homeowners to worry that it may never come off the stovetop. Some common tools from the local hardware or grocery store can help remove the plastic from the stove.

Things You'll Need

• Butter knife
• Razor blade
• Spray lubricant
• Household cleaner
• Clean cloths

Instructions

1. Turn the stove off and allow it to cool completely. Once cool, use the flat edge of a knife or other metal utensil to scrape up as much of the plastic as possible.

2. Spray the remaining residue liberally with a spray lubricant and allow it to sit for several minutes to soak into the plastic.

3. Use a razor blade to scrape the plastic carefully off the stove, moving cautiously so as not to scratch the stove. Reapply the spray lubricant as necessary to remove all of the plastic.

4. Apply a small amount of acetone nail polish remover to a cotton ball and apply to the remaining plastic film residue on the stove. Scrub gently to remove.

5. Clean the area with a mild household cleaner and a clean, damp cloth. Allow it to dry completely before using the stove for cooking.
